Midtronics DSS-7000

Midtronics has a successful line of diagnostic and charging tools for vehicle batteries. I was in charge of designing the UI for their first device to use a touch screen tablet display.

The Assignment: Redesign for a Tablet UI

The devices Midtronics had made to date all used small, simple displays and physical directional buttons. For their new high end diagnostics tool, they were moving to a tablet that could be removed from the main body of the unit. I was tasked with creating a new UI to handle the more advanced features and deeper information display that this new approach allowed.

UX Design

I started by learning all the functions of their existing devices and mapping out the workflows. The tablet UI meant we could add user accounts, fully detailed device history, customization settings, and new diagnostic apps. I wireframed out the product and created a clickable prototype of the entire interface.

Product Design

I handled design visual design for the product as well. We went with a utilitarian approach that suited the work focused product.
